HPE Competency 7- Learner Assessment

Description of Competency:
7.0 Learner Assessment: A health and fitness teacher understands and uses formal and informal assessment strategies to foster physical, cognitive, social and emotional development of learners.

Evidence:

Reflective Connections:

This evidence piece is a basketball lesson plan that includes learning outcomes, lesson connections, three assessment tools, instructional strategies, a list of materials, and modifications if needed. This evidence piece is one lesson plan out of three total, which focuses on dribbling technique and plyometrics. Additionally students perform the exercises with a partner and then log their repetitions. Each week students track their progress with the goal being they are able to perform more repetitions as the semester goes on. The other two lesson plans focus on passing the basketball, and shooting technique. This piece of evidence shows mastery of the outcome associated with this competency because it includes formal and informal assessments.

The exercise log is used as a formal assessment where students track their fitness progress as the semester goes on. Students are encouraged to beat their personal record from the previous week. This exercise log is an effective tool in physical education so that students can monitor improvements. Students record their starting point and use that as a baseline. They try to increase the number of repetitions they can perform in 1-minute intervals each week. The informal assessment used in this lesson is a basketball dribbling checklist. Students pair up and assess one another on their dribbling technique and provide feedback to their partner. The checklist includes developing, competent, and proficient levels for dribbling. A checklist is a useful tool for breaking down a skill, as well as, letting the educator and student know what they need to work on. These assessment tools display mastery of the outcome associated with this competency because it allows the educator to pause, reflect, and assess the effectiveness of their teaching methods and the impact they have on students’ learning. The assessments used within the lesson promote self-assessment, self-improvement, and serve as a motivational tool.
